As the name suggests, multiple small cysts on the ovaries are the hallmark of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. For years, doctors believed the cysts were causing the condition. But researchers now believe polycystic ovaries are a sign of the condition, not the cause.

In fact, a woman can be diagnosed with PCOS without having a single cyst on her ovaries.
