Cancer
 Cancer is a
nationally acknowledged specialty of the Detroit Medical Center, the clinical
affiliate of the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of the country's leading cancer research,
treatment, education and outreach centers. Through a unique partnership with Wayne State University, the Karmanos Cancer Institute's
physicians, researchers, scientists and volunteers are dedicated to detecting
and treating this life-threatening disease. Many new drugs and therapies for
lung, colon, breast and prostate cancers have resulted from the noted cancer
research conducted here.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Pheresis Lab is one of the most advanced
centers to offer transplants as curative treatment for diseases including
leukemias, breast cancer and sickle cell anemia. The Gershenson Radiation Oncology
Center houses the only superconducting cyclotron in the U.S. using neutron
radiation to treat cancers, and Michigan's only Gamma Knife used to treat a
variety of brain tumors through noninvasive radiation. For more information
